It is said that in the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. In 1981 however, he made MTV and Brisbane-born Vein Wear designer Christopher McCallum.
And like a biblical void of darkness filled by form ... Christopher went on to create 'Vein Wear' and 'Oken' and they too filled a void ... a void for Australian-designer men's shoes. At last, there was a refreshing alternative to mass manufactured overseas brands.
But for a passion for design, Vein Wear may never have taken form. Fresh out of high school, Christopher repressed his natural creative streak and succumbed to the pressure to get a 'proper career' ... and enrolled in Law and Commerce at university. However, two years later, armed with lecture pads filled with shoe designs, Christopher dropped university to embark on his passion for shoe design. As a result, Vein Wear was born.
A gritty urban cocktail of two parts creative perfectionist ... one part obsession for research into the most exciting of European and London styles and materials ... oh, and a liberal 'shot' of internationally-renowned cobbling mastery ... Vein Wear took form.
This new kid on the block swept into the industry with gusto. At last, quality craftsmanship usually reserved for staid high end labels were now available to the younger man. This mixed with Christopher's provocatively fresh designs, created the beginnings of an underground cult following.
By the end of 2003 Vein Wear was designing and selling full seasonal collections in various colours, styles and materials. Since then Vein Wear has established close relationships with clothing designers, and has collaborated in joint parades on the Australian fashion circuit.
Vein Wear shoes have featured on the runways of Australian Fashion Week, Brisbane Fashion Festival, Melbourne Fashion Festival, Australian Fashion Design Awards and Fashion Exposed Showcase to name but a few.
